Developing Future Leaders

Challenge

The Republic of Congo currently faces challenges in the access to quality education at all levels. Only 60% of children attend secondary school. Higher or vocational education needs to be enhanced to better respond to market needs. Moreover, large inequalities still remain based on geographical location or ethnicity.

In spite of the fact that the government has ear-marked an increase of 20% of its funding for educational programs receipt of those funds is linked to the growth in the country's oil revenues.

Currently, Wollo does not have any scholastic facilities. Given its geographical location, the region has no guarantee of receiving government support.

WSD's Vision

By 2023, WSD intends to build a school (primary/secondary) with 3 classrooms that can accommodate 100 students. Following its launch, Phase II is to construct a trades college to build capacity and support emerging industries.

Health Care

Access to Basic Health Care for All

Challenge

According to the General Directorate of Health and the World Health Organization (2009; 2012), the Republic of Congo has been experiencing a number of Heath Sector issues.
  • There are only 0.28 doctors, and 1.91 nurses & midwives per 10,000 inhabitants. In addition, the health workforce is aging and the quality of work has decreased.
  • As well there is a disproportionate geographical distribution in service provision: 66% of doctors, 42% of paramedical staff, and 28% of hospital beds are located in Brazzaville, where 37% of the population lives. Rural areas in the north of the country have the fewest health workers, especially doctors (1.1% -2.6%).
The country has a strategic plan for HRH (National Plan for Human Resources Development for Health [PNDRHS], 2011-2020) with an overall objective to improve the delivery system, recruitment and the management of health workers. The plan is intended to improve the national health care system through capacity building and mechanisms for intersectoral coordination at both central and decentralized levels.

WSD's Vision

By 2021, WSD will deliver a community health care centre to provide access to basic care for everybody.
